H 2 formation on interstellar dust grains : The viewpoints of theory , experiments , models and observations

چکیده
Molecular hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in the universe. It is the first one to form and survive photo-dissociation in tenuous environments. Its formation involves catalytic reactions on the surface of interstellar grains. The micro-physics of the formation process has been investigated intensively in the last 20 years, in parallel of new astrophysical observational and modeling progresses. In the perspectives of the probable revolution brought by the future satellite JWST, this article has been written to present what we think we know about the H 2 formation in a variety of interstellar environments. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The formation of H2 and HD with the master equation approach
The formation of H2 and HD molecules on interstellar dust grains is studied using rate equation and master equation models. Rate equations are used in the analysis of laboratory experiments which examine the formation of molecular hydrogen on astrophysically relevant surfaces. However, under interstellar conditions, rate equations are not suitable for the calculation of reaction rates on dust-g...
متن کاملInterstellar Grains
Overview Submicron solid particles are dispersed through interstellar gas. These interstellar grains absorb and scatter light, thus shielding some regions from ultraviolet radiation, but also limiting our ability to detect photons which have been emitted by astronomical objects. Dust grains reradiate absorbed energy in the in-frared, thus contributing to the overall emission spectrum of astrono...
متن کاملInterstellar Dust
In the interstellar medium of the Milky Way, certain elements – e.g., Mg, Si, Al, Ca, Ti, Fe – reside predominantly in interstellar dust grains. These grains absorb, scatter, and emit electromagnetic radiation, heat the interstellar medium by photoelectric emission, play a role in the ionization balance of the gas, and catalyze the formation of molecules, particularly H2. I review the state of ...
متن کاملOn the Absorption and Emission Properties of Interstellar Grains
Our current understanding of the absorption and emission properties of interstellar grains are reviewed. The constraints placed by the Kramers-Kronig relation on the wavelength-dependence and the maximum allowable quantity of the dust absorption are discussed. Comparisons of the opacities (mass absorption coefficients) derived from interstellar dust models with those directly estimated from obs...
متن کاملInterstellar Dust Models and Evolutionary Implications
The wavelength dependences of interstellar extinction and polarization, supplemented by observed elemental abundances and the spectrum of infrared emission from dust heated by starlight, strongly constrain dust models. One dust model that appears to be consistent with observations is presented. To reproduce the observed extinction, the model consumes the bulk of interstellar Mg, Si, and Fe (in ...
